Time permitting, we will also discuss the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Affordable Care Act) enacted March 23, 2010. This new code section imposes four new requirements on hospitals, as follows:
- Conduct a community health needs assessment (CHNA) every three years
- Establish a financial assistance policy and a policy relating to emergency medical care
- Limit amounts charged for emergency or other care provided to individuals eligible under the financial assistance policy
- Forego extraordinary collection actions before the organization has made reasonable efforts to determine whether the individual is eligible under the financial assistance policy
